An introduction to the use of carbon dioxide as an alternative to conventional drycleaning solvents reveals that, as a supercritical fluid, carbon dioxide exhibits significant solvent strength that can be fine tuned through temperature and pressure to meet specific solubility needs and optimize soil removal. Although supercritical carbon dioxide is compatible with most textile composites, it combines with the natural water contained in garments to form a weak carbonic acid, thus necessitating careful moisture management to prevent damage or shrinkage. Further research should be conducted to investigate the effect of carbon dioxide on the colorfastness of fabric.
