The Green Clean project is a joint effort by the Canadian Federal Department of the Environment, the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Ontario Fabricare Association, and the Korean Dry Cleaners Association. A stated goal of the project is the development of water-based apparel cleaning processes that reduce the need for and consumption of perchloroethylene. Phase one of the project examined the technical feasibility and customer response to nonsolvent drycleaning. Phase two, currently in progress, is encouraging drycleaners to adopt nonsolvent cleaning processes. A Green Clean drycleaning store, which is owned and operated by Rose Voleson, is demonstrating the commerical viability of the water-based cleaning processes. Water-based cleaning processes are also being used at two more Canadian drycleaners. Cleveland Smyth, a technician at Buttons and Bows of Toronto, and Yazdi Kharwanwala of Finchdale Cleaners of Toronto, provide tips for sorting and processing garments with water-based systems. Both operations use an IPSO Cleanwash System washing machine, Lever Tech's Neptune brand of liquid and phosphate-free soap, and an American Dryer Corporation ADS 80S-50 dryer. The next phase of the project, which will encourage the widespread adoption of perchloroethylene-free cleaning technologies by the Canadian drycleaning industry, will depend upon the promotional and educational efforts of the Ontario Fabricare Association.
