Although cotton remains the king of the denim market, other fibers, such as Lycra spandex, nylon, Tencel, and polyester, are carving bigger and bigger niches in the denim market. Consumers are looking for such attributes as softer hand, better drape, shine, and texture, which manmade fibers offer. To compete in a market saturated with five pocket indigo cotton jeans, some companies are offering innovative products, such as Soda Pop denim made from recycled plastic bottles. Cotton will likely remain the king of the denim market, accounting for nearly 97 percent of the denim market in 1994, but new fabrics can compete in the high-end market.
