Research at the Chinese University of Hong Kong has developed a biological treatment to replace stone washing and bleaching jeans to produce the distressed look. The treatmet uses two bacterium that remove and decompose the indigo and sulfur black dyes used to dye jeans. The treatment also yields a marketable end product: sodium thiosulfate. Companies interested in commercial development include Novo Nordisk A/S, Genencor California, and Sandoz Chemical Coporation.
