Advice on assembling garments containing Lycra is offered by the product manager-threads of Coats Ltd. Where unobtrusive but secoure stitching is required, together with relatively low extension of the sewn seam, lockstitch (stitch type 301) should be used. Where there is a requirement for higher seam extension and where the seam appearance needs to be reversible, the use of a more extensible thread such as a bulked polyester should be used. Stitch density, threads and needle sizes are discussed.
