Gases, such as ozone and nitrogen oxides, yellow indigo dyed jeanswear via decomposition during washing, making-up, and storage. Yellowing occurs most frequently during warm weater, particularly in stone bleached jeanswear, even in the absence of light. The problem appears as streaks along the folded edges of the jeanswear and as large patches on the surface. Yellowing is visible on the reverse side of the jeanswear, and, in light weight materials, through several layers in a stack. A warm rinsing treatment removes the yellow color, but fading remains. Among the strategies to prevent yellowing are the elimination of the use of softening agents that cause yellowing, the use of softening agents that inhibit yellowing, packing jeanswear in plastic film, elimination of the use of internal combustion engines around jeanswear, and removal of yellowing gases from storage areas. 6 refs.
