The durability, wearability, and colorfastness of drycleaned silk fabrics are dictated by the type of solvent and drycleaning method. Researchers investigating the effect of drycleaning solvents on the physical properties of silk used a drycleaning pump to clean soiled samples of both white and colored silk using pertroleum benzene and mineral turpentine. Results from visual inspection and measurement of fabric elongation, abrasion resistance, and crease recofery demonstrated that mulberry silk fabrics may be drycleaned at least ten times without experiencing significant changes in physical properties. In general, benzene petroleum appeared to be the superior solvent for both the white and colored fabric samples. Mineral turpentine solvent, however, yielded better breaking strength for all samples. 9 refs.
