Modern detergents contain four types of protein, sugar, and fat digesting enzymes (protease, lipase, amylase, and cellulase) that may degrade wool and other protein fibers. Increasing consumer complaints about wool and silk apparel have focused on thinning, color lose, harsh hand, and overall deterioration. To identify detergents that damage wool, the International Wool Secretariat (IWS) has conducted a series of experiments to evaluate the influence of detergent formulations on wool fiber damage after domestic laundering. Researchers measured weight loss after abrasion, determined strength loss via bursting tests, and conducted microscopical examinations. The IWS developed Test Method 286 to differentiate between detergents that are suitable for laundering wool apparel and those that damage wool. 2 refs.
