One of the main causes of graying in drycleaning is cleaning in a one bath system with dirty solvents. IFI standards require a solvent color transmittance level of 55 percent achieved via proper distillation procedures. To maintain the proper solvent flow rate, drycleaners should use powder filters and cartridge filters. Overloading the washer can also contribute to graying in drycleaning by restircting the flow of the filtered solvent through the wheel. Under loading the machine by 15-20 percent may prevent this problem. Apparel should be classified according to color and fiber type. Excess moisture may also cause the filter powder to fail to form a pre-coat on the tubes, screens, and/or bgags. If the moisture content in cleaning is too low, static charges may form that attract soil to the fabrics. The presence of dye can also cause solvent to become too dark for acceptable cleaning.
