Global Technologies of California is commercializing a new drycleaning technology. The process, DryWash, uses liquid carbon dioxide instead of perchloroethylene and is a nontoxic and nonflammable process that does not produce hazardous waste and does not deplete the ozone layer. The company claims that the carbon dioxide cleans all apparel types better than perchloroethylene, and does so more quickly and inexpensively. DryWash washing machines will be available later in 1997. Development of the DryWash process stems from research into supercritical fluids for precision parts cleaning in the aerospace industry. The system uses hydrodynamic agitation to provide mechanical action so there are no moving parts.
