a committee organized to standardize the evaluation o apparel that is resistant to biological liquids has developed test methods using synthetic blood to minimize the dangers o HIV infection among medical professionals. The committee, F-23, test such items as gloves and gowns, which previously have not been tested. A program for evaluating protective apparel was recently passed by OSHA. This program, however, does not give standards for performance evaluation. Previous test methods, which used water to measure a materials barrier properties, are inaccurate when assessing a material's ability to stop blood passage. Other test methods using bovine blood have been described; no standards have been adopted.
