Radio-frequency (RF) identification tagging is being used to track garments in laundry plants. Identification codes are encapsulated in a button affixed to the garment and can be read without contact, making them more advantageous than barcode identification. Using RF identification, a garment can be read from a distance of 70 centimeters, whether or not it is folded, and at any angle. Datamars, a manufacturer of RF systems, states that the idenfification chip will withstand 100 washing cycles and is resistant to heat and chemicals, unlike barcode tags. Tracking data can be handled by a computer that also controls transportation equipment.
