Richard D. Langton of Charcoal Cloth Limited has developed a lighweight and porous fabric that offers good protection from chemical and biological agents. The fabric is described in United States patent 5 112 666. The fabric is a composite composed of three layers. The outer layer can be composed of a twill fabric with a nylon warp and a modacrylic weft and can be treated with silicone water repellent and a fire-retardant. The intermediate layer is constructed from activated carbon. It absorbs poisonous fumes, but permits air and water vapor to pass through. The inner layer is a lining with good tear strength, tensile strength, and abrasion resistance. The multilayer construction has good aging properties and can be laundered.
