WEAR DUE TO LAUNDERING ON POLYNOSIC AND POLYNOSIC BLENDED TEXTILES

The effect of laundering on wear in polynosic fabrics and their blends used in apparel was examined. Two anionic detergents with varying pH, phosphate content, and percent active components were used. Fabric constructions with varying weights, warp and weft densities, Fabric constructions with varying weights, warp and weft densities, and percent polynosic were tested. Scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate mechanical damage caused by laundering. Pure polynoic fabrics were susceptible to fibriliation. Blends with cotton fibrillated more than blends with polyester. The optimal detergent depended on the blend. The detergent with lower pH, less phosphates, and higher activity was beter for the polyester blends and the pure polynosic. 24 refs.
