Drycleaning was introduced to Britain by Pullar's of Perth in 1866. The techniques of cleaning fabrics without recourse to soap and water, however, dates to a much earlier period. During the 16th and 17th centuries, a variety of books, known as books of secrets, comprised of culinary and other household recipes, amusing chemical tricks, secret writings, and useful advice on such topics as repairing broken china and silvering mirrors, were written for women. Several of these books offered instructions on how to remove grease spots from apparel, usually by means of fuller's earth or by the use of paper and a hot iron. Both methods involved absorption rather than dissolution. A book discussing the dissolution of grease was published in Paris in 1716. Abstract. 26 refs.
