A veriety of specialty fibers is finding applications in the protective apparel market. For example, flame resistant textiles were once only constructed from treated cotton. Now, coton blends and Acrilan-modacrylic fibers are popular because of their durability during laundering. Other protective apparel applications for specialty fibers include protection from heat, molten metal burns, toxic chemicals, bullets, and radiation. Each application is described with attention paid to the demands made on fibers used in each material's construction. Recommendations for creating a niche in this growing market are given. 16 refs.
