Wearers of protective ballstic vests demand both effective protection and comfort. Protective vests, jackets, and shirts, known as soft body armor, must be lightweight, easy to wear, and disguisable. Until now, p-aramid fibers such as Kevlar and Twaron were used for body armor, but high molecular weight polythylene (UHMWPE) now offers better comfort and protection. Manufactured in the United States by Allied Signal, UHMWPE fiber is marketed under the trade names Dyeema and Spectra. Allied combines its Spectra fiber with a thermoplastic elastomer, Spectra Shield, to give UHMWPE good performance at high temperatures. UHMWPE fiber also can be used to construct protective gloves for handlers of cut glass and sheet metal.
