In 1996, United States apparel industry employment decreased 8 percent to 831,000 workers. Reduced consumer spending, slow retail sales, and global competition contributed to the weaker apparel industry. During the first three quarters of 1996, home furnishings sales increased 5.6 percent. During the second quarter of 1996, textile industry profits increased 184 percent above the previous quarter. Lower labor requirements and reduced overhead costs contributed to the strengthening United States textile industry, however, total production for the first three quarters of 1996 was 9.8 billion square meters, or 5.4 percent lower than in 1995. Analysts predict the United States textile industry will no experience dramatic growth or decline in 1997 and that NAFTA will continue to shape import and export performance.
