Objective Rating of Seam Pucker Using Neural Networks

Most apparel manufacturers use a set of five photographic standards produced by the AATCC to rate seam pucker, a method that is both subjective and time consuming. Researchers developed an objective method for evaluating seam pucker in woven fabrics using artifical neural networks. A laser fitted to an automatic sewing machine coverts the puckered shape of a sewn fabric into numerical data on three dimensional coordinates. Fast Fourier transformation converts measurement data in a parallel direction with the seam line into power spectra on the frequency domain. The power spectra generates the specified patterns for the neural networks. Laboratory tests comparing the neural network system and conventional methods demonstrated that seam pucker evaluations of the neural networks were equivalent to the AATCC rating of well trained human experts. 21 refs.
