75 years of change in consumer textiles (1921-1996)

Changes in apparel and househoold textiles used by American consumers from 1921 to 1996 as they relate to significant events in the textile industry and in the broader society are reviewed and illustrated. Lmportant events singled out for attention include major pieces of legislation regulating textiles; technological advances in the textile industry, the home, and the workplace; and national and international events such as the Depression and World War II. The effect on textile use of changes in social customs and more are noted. Changes in fashion and in the fashion industry that have had a major impact on consumer textile use are highlighted. Lastly, factors that cause change in consumer use of textiles are identified.
