Puckering in seams depends on fabric weight, yarn density, and surface smoothness. New research on seam puckering in poplin fabrics showed that the warp density results in the sewing needle thrusting the yarns to the side, which causes puckering, especially where the seam runs parallel to the warp. Designing apparel with slight seam deviations prevents this problem. Using the finest possible spun polyester twist or core spun twist sewing threads and slightly rounded needle points also reduces puckering. Other thread factors that influence puckering include elasticity and sewing tension. Movement puckering results from uneven feeding of fabric layers. Rubber coated or cross pointed surface feed dogs offer more sensitive feeding of fabric. Double chainstitich seams reduce the danger of displacement puckering.
