A Contribution to the Study of Sewability of Wool and Wool Blend Fabrics. Part 3.

A methodical study of the incidence of parameters derived from the FAST system of fabric evaluation used 40 samples of wool and wool blend fabrics. Properties related to sewing were the force of sewing neelde penetration, sewability, and index of sewability. The study used two types of sewing needles with three different diameters. Preliminary analysis yielded 18 regression equations that were reducible to six by introducing the diameter of the sewing needle as a variable and to three by considering the interaction between the type and diameter of the sewing needle. An examination of the relationship between the type and diameter of sewing needles, fabric structural characteristics, and FAST parameters yielded regression equations for the force of sewing needle penetration, sewability, and the index of sewability based on 15 variables. 7 refs.
