Wet processing procedures differ among commercial denim manufacturers. Excessive amounts of alkali remaining in apparel after desizing affect enzyme abrasion performance and final fabric quality. Indigo denim fabrics analyzed for pH and total alkalinity showed large and variable amounts of alkali released during various desizing procedures. Variations in pH and alkalinity occurred in fabrics from different sources and within fabric styles from the same source. AATCC Test Method 81 yielded water extract pH values of 8.14-9.03. Total alkalinity using AATCC Test Method 144 ranged from 0.104-0.168. Low pH did not always reflect low alkalinity. Results suggested that the pH of enzyme abrasion baths must be buffered to compensate for the variable amounts of alkali in commercial denim fabrics. 2 refs.
