Peroxygen bleach detergents are the fastest growing segment of the laundry detergent industry, accounting for 27 percent of all granular laundry detergent sales. Hydrogen peroxides liberated from sodium perborate or sodium percarbonate represent the sole bleaching species in nonactivated 'with bleach' detergents. Activated peroxygen bleach detergents convert hydrogen peroxide to bleach species that have greater cleaning efficacy than nonactivated bleaching species under moderate washing conditions (temperatures of approximately 90 degrees Fahrenheit). The percentage of colored washable items increased from 62 percent in 1966 to 75 percent in 1996. Approximately 40 percent of dyed washable textiles in the United States and Canada contain reactive dyes. Direct dyes account for 15 percent of the market.
