investigations of the composition and distribution of neutral organic compounds in groundwater from a series of wells within and near an underground coal gasification site over a 15-mo period suggest that the neutral compounds of concern are a series of low-molecular-weight, water-soluble aromatic hydrocarbons. these compounds are apparently dissolved from a more complex mixture of hydrocarbons in by-product tar deposited in the aquifer substrate evidence for transport of the low-molecular-weight aromatic hydrocarbons in the groundwater is presented. a series of heterocyclic sulfur compounds is observed within the gasification cavity, but these do not seem to be transported in the groundwater system.
