a series of friction and wear experiments have been carried out on materials and lubricants used in miniature inertial-grade ball bearings. the materials studied, all used in porous bearing cages, include three types of porous polyimide and three types of cotton-reinforced phenolic. the lubricants used were super-refined mineral oils having various viscosities. the experimental apparatus was designed to simulate as accurately as possible the ball-cage contact geometry in an r4 gyroscope bearing. a sphere-on-flat geometry was used, the sphere being a 0. 0024 meter diameter bearing ball rotating at 24,000 rpm, and the flat being a specimen of cage material. the coefficient of friction was determined for the dry materials and for the various materials impregnated with super-refined mineral oils
