The GDS Shoe Fair, held in Dusseldorf, Germany, is the world's largest footwear exhibition. The March 1998 show featured exhibitors from 47 different countries. Autumn/winter styles for 1998-1999 were less heavy and chunky than last year's square and platform styles. Narrow welts, curvy shapes, pointed toes, narrower heels, and asymmetric styling formed the more elegant look of this year's fashions. Street shoes, such as those shown by Air Walk, Vans, and Bizo, followed the skate-board retro shell soled suede look. The predominant color for women's and men's shoes is black, with brown as an alternative. Materials included soft leathers, Nubuck, metallic finishes, velvet, and elastic.
