Researchers evaluated the use of ultrasonic cleaning methods as alternatives to drycleaning textiles with percholoroethylene (PCE). Test screened over 1340 solvents according to their ability to dissolve fats, waxes, and grease. Of those tested, 11 had no adverse effects. The AATCC gray scale for staining was used to evaluate wool, cotton, linen, polyester, and rayon fabric samples that were washed in an Atlas Launder-Ometer and in an ultrasonic cleaning system. Results indicated that soil removal is solvent to soil specific; that solvents capable of removing soil in the Launder-Ometer have a comparable ability in the ultrasonic system; and that the solvents propylene glycol tertiary butyl-ether, propylene glycol normal butyl-ether, and propylene glycol normal propyl-ether were comparable with PCE treatments under certain conditions. 6 refs.
