Ordinary detergents do not properly remove sebum from the interior of cotton fibers. Alkaline cellulase, acting selectively with the alkaline ingredients of detergents, effectively removes sebum soil in the interfiber spaces. The detergency mechanism of the cellulase involves hydrolysis of the amorphous regions of the fibers. 17 refs.
