The wet-laid process can be used to produce barrier fabrics for industrial protective apparel. Polyolefins have optimal properties and processability for this application. Good chemical resistance because of intrinsic hydrophobicity is an advantage. Coating and chemical finishing can further enhance barrier properties. A wet-laid polyolefin barrier fabric combined with a spunbonded nonwoven is used in the manufacture of a composite that is functional and has excellent appearance. Low-cost materials, such as wood pulp or silica, can be used as additives to decrease production costs.
