Flax and hemp fibers provide environmentally friendly raw materials for apparel manufacture. Adjusting production parameters and fiber properties reduces the costs associated with these fibers in apparel manufacture by permitting the use of modern spinning methods. Raw or dew retted straw must be improved via enzymatic or steam treatment. The Institute of Natural Fibers in Poznan manufactured and sold wool/flax/hemp yarns to textile factories in Poland and other countries. Apparel items based on flax and hemp fiber offer greater durability and improved hygienicity. Apparel quality flax and hemp fibers feature high tensile strength, low deformation during stretch, maximum dry elongation of 1.5 percent, maximum wet elongation of 1.0 percent, bacteriostatic properties, antielectrostatic properties, high hygroscopicity, ultraviolet protection, and ecologically safe production and final disposal. 6 refs.
