While investigators have studied apparel pressure as an index of the wearer's feeling of comfort, their results have lacked a specific parameter describing this pressure. Apparel pressure was determined by a hydrostatic pressure-balanced method, which uses a nonelastic polyethylene pouch filled with distilled water. Pressure developed at the pouch was transmitted to a transducer through a slender tube. Pouches were located between the wearer's skin and apparel. No hysteresis in the pressure graphs was observed in a range from -25 to 150 millimeters of mercury. Waistband pressures were measured by this system; their amplitudes changed in response to respiration. 16 refs.
