The drycleaning industry is being challenged by stricter regulations for health and safety as well as environmental concerns. Common solvents used in drycleaning are perchloroethylene and CFC 113 (1, 1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane). Alternatives are being researched to replace these solvents. Wet cleaning is an alternative process that involves adapting laundering machines, reducing speeds, using special detergents and additives, and using tumble dryers and other finishing machines. Wet cleaning offers the following benefits: reduced environmental impact, brighter colors, less redeposition, fresh smell, lower price to wash ratio, and lower investment. Currently, 50-80 percent of the outerwear processed by drycleaners can be treated using a wet cleaning process. GINETEX is discussing a new care label for wet cleaning apparel.
