A study investigated the validity of Gaskill's (1992) retail product development model across a broad range of specialty stores and extended the model beyond line presentation to encompass events and consideration in postadoption product development. The Gaskill model delineates the sequencing of events that occurs in the retail product development process in conjunction with internal and external variables affecting the process. Researchers interviewed 21 men's, women's, and children's specialty store retailers reporting 70-100 percent of sales from private label merchandise through in-house product development. Stages presented in the original model were confirmed but required modifications. The study has applications for both the retail industry and educators. 28 refs.
