Although studies show that United States consumers are concerned about the environment, those concerns do not readily translate into recycling or the puchase of environmentally responsible products. To determine whether pro-environmental attitudes lead to the purchase of goods containing recycled fibers, researchers conducted a shopping experiment in which subjects could purchase apparel from recycled or nonrecycled fibers for a camping trip. Prices of the products were rotated to determine if price, recycled, labeling, or an interaction of the two influenced purchasing decisions. Results indicated that consumers with pro-environmental attitudes were more likely to buy recycled goods, were more likely to look for higher prices goods, and had higher incomes. Females were more likely to purchase products containing recycled fibers. Price considerations, however, offset environmental concerns in most purchase decisions.
