In 1999, the Garment Analysis Laboratory examined approximately 16,000 apparel, household, and medical products to determine the causes of reported drycleaning problems. The study assigned responsibility for damages to manufacturers (40 percent), consumers (36 percent), and drycleaners (14 percent). Solvent soluble dyes, prints, and coatings accounted for 21 percent of manufacturing problems. Major consumer problems included stains from inks, hair preparations, oils, and beverages and color loss from bleaches and other chemicals. Color loss from improper spotting accounted for 28 percent of drycleaner problems. Tables show the type and number of problems in each responsibility category.
