Environmental concerns regarding wastewater could have negative effects for industrial launderers. Launderers are currently required to meet the standards of their local Publicly Owned Treatment Works(POTW), whose regulations vary from locality to locality. Implications for launderers in the 1990s, based on concerns for clean water, include a consolidation of the industry in order to meet clean-up costs, building special processing plants for heavily soiled items, and increased costs. Developing methods of handling wastewater could, however, create new opportunities for launderers in the future.
