Regulations affecting laundry wastewater discharges have varied tremendously since the United States EPA allowed local agencies to set regional standards. In order to help launderers meet these regional guidelines, chemists are developing a pH sensitive detergent that lowers the pH of wastewater. This detergent breaks up emulsions and decreases the fat, oil and grease(FOG) content; however, the FOG content is not lower than the industry's 100 ppm limit.
