A presentation at the 1999 torn fibers colloquium addressed recyclable nonwoven automobile upholstery fabrics. In Germany, approximately 1.5 million vehicles are scrapped per year. Recycling recovers approximately 75 percent of the materials used in each vehicle. A change in vehicle component materials would allow recovery and reprocessing of 95 percent of the materials from scrapped vehicles. Conventional upholstery fabrics consist of layers of fabric, including foam cushioning and knit fabrics. Researchers are studying the use of stitch bonded Kunit and Multikunit nonwoven fabrics and nonwoven fabrics containing a large proportion of torn fibers as methods to increase automobile upholstery fabric recycling.
