Revolution in seamless underwear and outerwear manufacture

The theme of automation in the hosiery and knitting industry has been gathering pace since the introduction of electronic needle selection and computer control in the 1960s and 1970s, and is now veering towards the production of complete garments on the knitting machine, which require little or no sewing afterwards. Such garments offer a high degree of comfort since they are seamless and place fewer limitations on the pattern and stitch structure. Some of the latest machine developments are briefly reviewed, with particular reference to the activities of Santoni and Shima Seiki.
