Local puckering and dark splatter marks can appear on leather after professional cleaning due to stains from substances containing salt residue. This type of staining can be invisible prior to cleaning and is not generally removed by convention leather cleaning processes. The heat of the drying and finishing processes shrinks the salt stained area and stiffens or cracks the leather. Rinsing a leather fabric with cold water immediately after contact with a salt containing substance and allowing it to air dry is the only reliable method of preventing this type of damage. If the stain is still fresh and visible, a professional cleaner can attempt to remove the salt residue prior to cleaning to minimize the damage.
