From modest beginnings in the 18th century, swimwear has undergone several dramatic changes. It has become a hi-tech, high fashion business which has attracted sportswear giants, top fashion designers and traditional clothing retailers. major developments in fabric technology have revolutionised swimming and created massive interest in what has traditionally been a low-tech sport. Following the introduction of full length bodysuits last year, more swimming records were broken in the run-up to the 2000 Olympic Games than in any other pre-Olympic period. The arrival of high-tech swimsuits has created a great deal of debate over whether technology which enhances athletes' performances should be allowed into the sport. It has also led to a battle between Speedo-the dominant player in the swimwear industry-and Adidas, which has only recently entered the market and which sponsored the US and British Olympic teams in Sydney. Manufacturers of the new suits are hoping that the controversy will spark new interest in a sport which only comes to the public's attention once every four years when the Olympic Games are held.
