Panels with intelligent properties are broadening the applications of textile materials. By utilizing sensor based and actuator based functions, textiles respond to environmental changes, measure temperature, and sense the heart beat and breathing of the wearer. The regulation of heat and flame resistant protective clothing and equipment is expected to increase. Developments will involve the use of flame resistant fibers with novel materials, optimized fiber mixtures for greater heat isolation, and increased wearer comfort. Computer simulations of heat penetration yield important results for product development. Other developments in protective clothing and equipment include protection against electromagnetic radiation and highly conductive equipment for high voltage environments. 1 ref.
