This third installment in a series of articles on intelligent fabrics addresses their history and future prospects. The Apollo spacesuit was one of the first garments to incorporate intelligent fabrics to prevent overheating. Musical jackets, which feature an embroidered keypad, MIDI sequencer, amplifying speakers, and fabric bus sewn from conductive organza, allow consumers to play notes, chords, and rhythms. A cooperative effort between Reima-Tutta Corporation, the University of Lapland, Tapere University of Technology, DuPont, Nokia, Polar Electro, and Suunto developed apparel with communication, navigation, and user and environmental monitoring capabilities. Starlab TCAS, Philips, F.A.C. Fashion Design Germany, PDD, and Reebok have also developed a variety of intelligent products.
