Medical gowns and drapes minimize the risk of disease in healthcare workers, reduce the risk of disease transmission between patients, and maintain a sterile surgical or procedure field. Characteristics of the ideal gown or drape include consistent barrier effectiveness, comfort, functionality, low total costs, tear and puncture resistance, sterilizability, drapeability, biocompatibility, and flame resistance. Commercial gowns and drapes are manufactured from reusable polyester sheeting and coated or laminated combinations of woven and knit fabrics, as well as single use spun laced, wet laid, and spun bonded/melt blown/spun bonded fabrics. Reusable gowns provide less protection than single use gowns. Laminates or polypropylene treated gowns provide the greatest protection against blood strikethrough and bacterial penetration. Life cycle inventories demonstrate that single use and reusable gowns have a similar environmental impact.
