A joint venture between DuPont Performance Fabrics, Wilmington, Del. And Glen Raven Mills, Glen Raven, NC has introduced a collection of woven fabrics containing DuPont CoolMax Arai, Loouise Berube, Lia Cook, Emily DuBois, Frances Dorsey, Laura Foster Nicholson, Ruth Schueing, Cynthia Schira, Liz Williamson, Hideo Yamakuchi and Bhakti Ziek. The catalogue exists only in CD-ROM format and this is extensively discussed. Two sections - “The Observatory” and “The Laboratory” are described. “Observatory: “Individual and industry” discusses the general themes with the weavings dividing into handwoven by the artist or conceived by the artist but woven industrially, with much of the work woven at The Nontreal Center for Contemporary Textiles, where several of the weavers trained. Background details and further information on the artists is supplied. “Observatory: “Language” Examines the use of words: As a notation, in declarative form and as a code unfolding image, with examples. “Laboratory: “Body and Memory” explores the relationship between cloth and memory, exemplified in particular works.
