Wearable electronics are explained. Philips Research has, sine 1997, been looking at combining fashion and wearable electronics. The Galvactivator and the Sensor Jacket are two products. The Galvactivator registers whether the wearer is highly aroused with electrodes on a glove palm containing wiring and circuitry the wearers skin completes the circuit and activates the electronics. The Sensor jacket combines fashion, electronics, textiles and software. Its design, structure and functions are described. Commercial developments in partnership with Levi Strauss Europe are noted Levis Industrial Clothing Division (ICD). Four jackets in the autumn 2000 range the ICD+range contained integrated electronics from Philips, listed. The ICD+ range as fashion item/technology/piece of design is discussed together with the social attitudes engendered. There is speculation on the motivation of typical purchasers. The desire to experience fashion combined with technology was a crucial factor. A list of websites with more information is appended.
