Yarn and fabric innovations for high-tech clothing (German) (Garn-und Gewebeinnovationen fur Hochtechnologie-Bekleidung)

Many German producers are increasingly concentrating on producing high-tech clothing in the face of massive competition from low-wage-cost countries. Some of the latest developments include smart textiles, which are specially constructed textile structures which, in addition to their usual apparel functions, also fulfil additional functions, such as electrical/electronic, physical, chemical/biological, physiological, aesthetic/optical. This has led to the development of new materials, e.g. shape-memory and phase-change materials, new yarns, e.g. hybrid yarns featuring an electrically conductive core and a package of fibres loaded with an active agent, new fabric treatments, e.g. the Evolon process, in which a nonwoven fabric is water-jet bonded and the bicomponent fibres are split by water jets, new finishing techniques, e.g. plasma treatments, and new making-up procedures.
