The Japan international Apparel Machinery (JIAM) show was held in mid-May 2002 in Osaka, Japan. This review some of the seminars includes one on biodegradable fibre given by one of the original researchers who developed “Lactron”, a biodegradable synthetic fibre made from polyactic acid derived from corn starch. The fibre has characteristics similar to silk. Aramid fibres were the subject of another discussion and in particular the properties of the flame retardant fibre “Conex” which forms a carbonized layer insulating the wearer on contact with fire. Product development is now the main issue for this fibre. The subject of ‘smart’ garments formed the material for another presentation. While most visitors were focusing on innovation in sewing machinery the implications of advanced fibre technology was not forgotten.
