The 2001 world Survey of producing capacity was completed in the second quarter of 2002 and reports actual capacity as of March 2002 plus projected capacity for December 2003. In the 2001 survey the outlook for expansion of synthetic fiber capacity calls for capacities to increase between March 2001 and December 2003 as follows: acrylic up 0.4%, nylon up 2.3%, polyester staple up 11.7%, and polyester filament up 5.4% The majority of the capacity expansions in all fibers will be in China with additions in million pounds as follows: acrylic up 132, nylon up 331, and polyester up 3,031. The one other area reporting major expansion is Other Asia in the amount of plus 1,904 million pounds of polyester with India, Indonesia and Thailand in the lead. Elsewhere in Asia - Japan, Taiwan, Korea - Plans call for contraction of polyester capacity and only modest expansion of capacity in other fiber types. The average annual capacity expansion from 2000 through 2003 for all synthetics, excluding olefin, will be 3% per year. This compares with a 20 year trend growth rate in production of all manufactured fiber of 5% per year indicating a trend to return to an improved balance of supply and demand for the global industry.
